“0403 Hualien Earthquake”

It occurred off the coast of Hualien County, Taiwan, at 7:58 minutes and 9.9 seconds on April 3, 2024. According to observation data from the Central Weather Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the earthquake was caused by the northward tilting pressure of the Philippine Sea Plate. The magnitude of the earthquake reached ML 7.2 and the depth was about 15.5 kilometers. In the Heping area of ​​Xiulin Township, Hualien County, a maximum earthquake intensity of 6 was observed on the Central Meteorological Administration's earthquake scale, while it reached 9 (IX) on the Mercalli earthquake scale. This earthquake is also the largest earthquake event in Taiwan in the past 25 years after the 921 earthquake. Currently, according to statistics from the Fire Department of the Ministry of Interior, the number of casualties in this earthquake has increased to 9 deaths and 821 injuries.
